High Peak -- Encyclop dia Britannica
High Peak borough (district), northwestern part of the administrative county of Derbyshire, north-central England. Most of the borough is part of the historic county of Derbyshire, but its northern edge includes Tintwhistle and the north side of Langdendale, which belong to the historic county of Cheshire. It occupies an upland area between the densely populated metropolitan areas of Greater Manchester (west) and South Yorkshire (east). The borough's High Peak has an elevation of 2,088 feet (636 metres), the highest in the southern Pennines, which form the upland “spine” of England. Except for valleys along its western border, the borough lies within Peak District National Park. The flat-topped, bleak, hard sandstone moorlands in the north and east are underlain by limestone bedrock, which is exposed in the denuded plateau-and-valley region of the southwest. Clusters of towns industrially associated with Greater Manchester's cotton-milling industries are centred on Glossop and New Mills in the extreme west. Limestone quarrying is important around Buxton, a spa dating from Roman times, in the southwest; potter's clay and blue john (a kind of fluorspar) are also mined. The rough grazing of sheep occurs throughout the borough. Tourists visit the region for rock climbing, grouse hunting, and exploring caverns. Chapel-en-le-Frith is the administrative centre. Area 209 square miles (541 square km). Pop. (1998 est.) 88,900.

Summer heralds some of the most beautiful and truly fascinating flora the British countryside has to offer and orchids represent our most glamorous and highly regarded wildflowers. In most people s mind the term orchid portrays an exotic flower of tropical forests, not of British wildflowers that grow on damp meadows, bogs, limestone scree slopes and grasslands. It may surprise many people, therefore, that Britain can boast around 50 or so species of which 16 species occur within the boundaries of the world s most visited national park the Peak District . The region is divided into two distinct regions-the Dark Park where the predominant rock is Millstone Grit. The "White Peak" is where limestone and basalt outcrops are the geological formations that give this region of the Peak District its name. Despite their image as fragile rarities, most of Britain s native orchids are survivors, whose exquisite summer blooms redeem the wasteland that is their unlikely habitat.

THE DERBYSHIRE PEAK DISTRICT The geological story in the Peak District begins some 325 million years ago in the early Carboniferous when the British Isles were just a few degrees south of the Equator. A shallow tropical lagoon had formed floored by fine shifting sediments of mud formed by the shells and bodies of countless sea creatures. Forests of sea-lilies waved their feathery arms in unison with the currents while coiled ammonites used jet propulsion to catch their prey. Near the edges of this lagoon, which stretched 25 miles long by 10 miles wide, forests of sea-weeds were trapping and building up the skeletons of thousands of sea creatures eventually to form fringing-reef mounds. Beyond the reefs, a similar process of accumulation was going on, only more slowly, in the deeper ocean.

This area of black peat hags, deep groughs and eroded gritstone outcrops played a vital role in the Access to Open Moorland Campaign which culminated in the 1932 'Mass Trespass'. Angry that access was restricted solely for grouse shooting, 400 protestors confronted Kinder's landowners. The event paved the way for the creation of the National Parks.
