Mark has enjoyed hiking for most of his life, with experience of many parts of the country. Since moving to Devon many years ago, he has accumulated a good knowledge of Dartmoor and the coast of the region. Mark is a member of the British Mountaineering Council and is a qualified Walking Group Leader with a certificate in Rescue Emergency Care taken at The National Mountain Centre, Plas Y Brenin in Wales.

Dartmoor Walk 1999
Okehampton to Plymouth across Dartmoor - June 1999 At the beginning of June I was part of a two day walk across Dartmoor. This area is known for its unpredictable weather, the bleak landscapes and the lack of civilisation and so it was a natural choice for a sponsored walk in aid of my daughter's school classroom appeal! We knew in our heart of hearts that we weren't going to escape the weather and we didn't, the suncream was simply a challenge "Go on - give us some sun, Lord!", but he didn't take the bait! Anyway, we've hopefully raised over 3000 pounds and to give you an idea of the atmosphere and conditions there follows a narrative I have written in the last week.

Sound walks have been a key activity for Sounding Dartmoor. Walks have been led throughout Dartmoor by a range of individuals with different relationships to the land. While some walks are more focused towards natural history sounds and recordings, some spurred by the sound nominations, other walks have reflected the convergence of human culture and nature or have taken in events such as Dartmoor Pony Show in Princetown. The amazing thing that happens on such walks is the sonic surprises that could not have been anticipated or planned by the walkers or the leader.

Walking in Devon
Devon Glorious Devon rightly deserves to be one of England's favourite holiday destinations. It has everything from the the warm 'English Riviera' of the south coast to the dramatic rugged cliffs of the north coast, and is surely one of the jewels of England's richly varied countryside. Protecting the southern coast with its mediteranean flora, is the wild and brooding mass of Dartmoor National Park, a stunning contrast and providing a unique walking experience. In the north east, part of the softer fissured moorland of Exmoor tumbles over the county boundary. Central Devon is also enchanting with it's rolling green hills, narrow winding lanes and sleepy villages. The East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides a rich coloured tapestry of red, lush green and chalk white. The Blackdown Hills AONB, a series of ridges on the Devon / Somerset border, provide easy pleasant walking with very few people. The only problem with Devon is being spoilt for choice.
